Philly Spring Cleanup a success

Neighborhood heroes: More than 25 volunteers removed 102 discarded car and truck tires, 66 bags of trash and five bags of recyclable cans on April 8.

Volunteers from the Friends of Poquessing Watershed and the Parkwood Civic Association teamed up to beautify the 15000 block of McNulty Road during the Philly Spring Cleanup on Saturday, April 8.

There were 27 volunteers in all, including students who were fulfilling community service obligations, neighbors and Philadelphia Water Department employees. They targeted the Poquessing Creek Trail and surrounding areas, removing 102 discarded car and truck tires, 66 bags of trash and five bags of recyclable cans.

Among the items removed from the landscape were a television, two picnic tables, a smashed toilet, a road sign, a golf bag, two backpacks, window blinds, a lawn chair, a hardhat, a tarp, a New Jersey license plate, two car seats, an arrow, a “scary” doll, a deer skull, a gas can, two gallons of motor oil, a car door and two car grills.

The Friends of Poquessing will host monthly cleanups during the spring and summer. The next one will be on May 13, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Waldemire Drive and Red Lion Road. It will coincide with the city’s Love Your Park Week, sponsored by Philadelphia Parks and Recreation and the Fairmount Park Conservancy. Volunteers are welcome and should wear long pants and sleeves and sturdy, comfortable footwear. Bug repellent and sunscreen are recommended.
